Courtney folded her arms.

“I was protecting the neighborhood.”

Renee shook her head.

“You were protecting your assumptions.”

Kyle stepped closer.

“Let’s all calm down.”

Marcus looked directly at him.

“Sergeant, I believe we need a supervisor here.”

Kyle glanced toward the cruiser.

“Sir, the issue has been resolved.”

Marcus shook his head.

“My wife has been released. That doesn’t mean the incident has been properly documented.”

The words settled over the driveway.

Because Kyle had begun to understand that the problem was no longer whether Renee owned the house.

It was how he had treated her before checking.

Chapter 8: The Neighbor Who Recorded Everything

Across Magnolia Court, a seventy-year-old man named Walter Ellis had been watering his hydrangeas when the police cruiser arrived.

Walter was a retired postal worker.

He had lived in Lynen Ridge for almost twenty-five years.

He knew the Hendersons.

He knew Courtney.

And he knew the gray house had been sold.

The previous owners had mentioned the transaction before moving away.

When Walter saw Renee being questioned, he assumed the misunderstanding would be resolved quickly.

Then Kyle handcuffed her.

Walter became concerned.

He took out his phone and began recording from his front porch.

The video captured part of the conversation.

It showed Courtney standing beside her husband.

It recorded Renee explaining that her documents were inside.

And it captured the moment Marcus arrived.

Walter didn’t know whether the recording would matter.

But he believed the truth needed to be preserved.

After Renee was released, he approached the driveway.

“Mrs. Caldwell?”

She turned.

“Yes?”

“I’m Walter Ellis. I live across the street.”

Renee nodded.

“Hello.”

Walter looked toward Marcus.

“Sir, I just wanted you to know that I saw what happened.”

Marcus remained quiet.

Walter continued.

“The Hendersons told me their house was sold. I knew someone was moving in.”

Renee looked surprised.

“You did?”

He nodded.

“Yes, ma’am.”

Then he held up his phone.

“And I recorded part of the encounter.”
