Camille looked at him.
“No, Deputy. I know exactly who you are.”
Then she added quietly:
“The question is whether you’ve thought about who you might be dealing with.”
Chapter 7: The Call That Reached the Outgoing Sheriff
After the second window shattered, Rachel Moore called the sheriff’s office.
She reported that a deputy appeared to be damaging a woman’s vehicle during a traffic stop.
The dispatcher requested the location.
Rachel provided the address.
Then she explained that several neighbors were recording.
The dispatcher contacted the patrol unit.
“Unit Twelve, confirm your status at Magnolia Ridge Drive.”
Daniel reached for his shoulder microphone.
“Unit Twelve, we have a vehicle stop.”
The dispatcher continued.
“Receiving a report of property damage involving a sheriff’s deputy. Request supervisory confirmation.”
Voss grabbed his radio.
“Dispatch, everything is under control.”
A pause followed.
Then another voice came through.
“Sergeant Voss, this is Captain Leonard Briggs. Explain the report of vehicle damage.”
Voss hesitated.
“Captain, I have a suspected stolen vehicle.”
“Has the stolen vehicle report been confirmed?”
“No, sir.”
“Then why are we receiving calls about broken windows?”
Voss looked toward the Bentley.
He suddenly seemed uncertain.
Camille remained still.
Daniel glanced toward her.
He had noticed how carefully she had handled the entire encounter.
She wasn’t panicking.
She wasn’t threatening anyone.
She was observing.
Documenting.
And waiting.
Captain Briggs continued.
“Sergeant, preserve the scene. I’m responding.”
Voss lowered the radio.
His face was pale.
But he still didn’t know the most important detail.
The woman standing beside the damaged Bentley was the person who would become his commanding officer at midnight.
Chapter 8: The Supervisor Who Recognized Her
Captain Leonard Briggs arrived fifteen minutes later.
He stepped out of his patrol SUV and immediately noticed the shattered windows.
Glass covered the pavement.
Several neighbors stood nearby.
A young deputy looked visibly shaken.
And a woman in an expensive designer outfit stood beside the damaged Bentley.
Briggs approached.
“Ma’am, are you injured?”
Camille shook her head.
