School supplies.
And the belongings of both children when they moved away for college.
It had brought Samuel home from countless ordinary errands.
And it had been parked beside the garage the afternoon Sergeant Baird accused him of theft.
Andre watched his father quietly.
“Does it still bother you?”
Samuel nodded.
“Sometimes.”
Andre stepped closer.
“We can get rid of it if you want.”
Samuel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward the house.
“That man already took enough from me.”
Andre remained silent.
Samuel continued.
“I’m not giving up the things I love because of what he did.”
Andre smiled.
“Then we’ll keep it running.”
Samuel nodded.
“Good.”
They returned to work.
Two men standing beside an aging pickup.
A father and son sharing the kind of ordinary afternoon that had once seemed impossible to recover.
Chapter 19: The Video He Almost Never Checked
One evening, Andre sat at his kitchen table reviewing family photographs.
His daughter had asked him to find pictures of Samuel for a school project about family history.
He opened old folders.
There were photographs of Samuel teaching students in the automotive workshop.
Pictures of Evelyn standing beside the garden.
Images of birthday parties, graduations, and summer barbecues.
Then Andre noticed the folder containing the security recordings from the day of the confrontation.
He paused.
For months, those files had been central to the investigation.
They had shown the toolbox being placed in the truck.
They had revealed Baird’s presence at the scene.
And they had helped establish what happened before Samuel was accused of theft.
Andre had reviewed them many times with investigators.
Now, however, he saw something he had overlooked.
A short recording from the porch camera earlier that morning.
He opened it.
The image showed Samuel standing beside the front door.
He was holding a watering can.
He turned toward the American flag beside the porch steps.
The flag had become tangled around its pole.
Samuel set the watering can down.
Then carefully untangled the fabric.
He straightened the flag.
Stepped back.
And smiled.
The recording lasted only thirty seconds.
