“Stay out of it!”

Then the front door of the house opened.

A tall Black man stepped onto the porch.

He was forty-six, wearing a navy work shirt and dark trousers, with a phone in his hand.

He looked toward the patrol SUV.

Then at his father.

His expression changed instantly.

“DAD!”

The man ran down the porch steps.

His name was Andre Bennett.

And he was carrying something that would destroy the sergeant’s explanation of everything that had happened.

Chapter 2: The Son Who Refused to Lose His Father

Andre Bennett had never seen his father look so helpless.

Samuel had always been the strong one.

The man who repaired broken fences.

The man who changed flat tires for elderly neighbors.

The man who continued mowing his own lawn even after his doctor advised him to slow down.

Now he was bent against a police vehicle, struggling to breathe.

Andre’s first instinct was to pull the officer away.

But he stopped several feet from them.

He understood that sudden physical interference could make the situation more dangerous.

“Officer, please release my father.”

Baird turned sharply.

“Stay back!”

Andre raised both hands.

“I’m staying right here.”

“Then mind your business.”

Andre looked toward Samuel.

“That’s my father.”

Baird tightened his jaw.

“Then tell him to stop resisting.”

Andre shook his head.

“He’s seventy-eight years old. He has a heart condition. He needs medical attention.”

Samuel tried to speak.

“Andre…”

His voice was barely audible.

Andre felt a wave of fear.

“Dad, don’t try to talk.”

He turned toward Deputy Navarro.

“Please call an ambulance.”

Elise already had her radio in hand.

“Dispatch, requesting EMS. Elderly male, breathing difficulties following a physical confrontation.”

Baird looked furious.

“I didn’t authorize that!”

Elise met his eyes.

“Sergeant, he needs help.”

For several seconds, they stared at one another.

Then Baird loosened his grip.

Samuel slid awkwardly toward the ground.

Andre moved closer.

“May I help him sit?”
