Nadine requested a supervisor.
Within minutes, she was speaking with Lieutenant Rachel Monroe.
Rachel reviewed the annex appointment schedule.
No meeting with Arvand appeared.
She also checked the facility’s access records.
The old building was supposed to be used for routine administrative work that afternoon.
No formal interview had been scheduled.
Rachel became concerned.
She contacted the duty supervisor and requested that officers check the annex.
Nadine also notified the independent investigators handling the Darius Bell evidence review.
She did not know exactly what was happening.
But she knew Arvand had entered a police facility for a meeting the department couldn’t verify.
And she knew the officer assigned to the building had been named in records connected to a wrongful conviction.
That combination was enough to justify immediate attention.
Chapter 11: The Young Officer in the Hallway
Officer Jasmine Reed was twenty-eight.
She worked in the administrative division and had been assigned to inventory old records at the annex.
Shortly after five o’clock, she heard a loud metallic sound from the lower corridor.
At first, she assumed someone had dropped equipment.
Then she heard a man’s voice.
“Sign the statement!”
Jasmine stopped.
She recognized Officer Riker.
She approached the corridor cautiously.
The interrogation room door was closed.
A deadbolt had been turned.
She knocked.
“Officer Riker?”
Silence.
Then Riker answered.
“What?”
“Everything okay?”
“Fine. Go back upstairs.”
Jasmine hesitated.
“Is someone in there?”
“Official interview.”
She looked at the door.
No interview appeared on the facility schedule.
And departmental procedures required interviews involving detained individuals to be documented.
She took out her radio.
“Control, can you confirm an authorized detention or interview in the lower annex?”
The dispatcher checked.
Then answered.
“Negative. No active detention logged at that location.”
Jasmine felt her stomach tighten.
She looked toward the heavy door.
Then stepped back.
“Control, request a supervisor. Possible undocumented detention.”
Inside the room, Riker heard the radio.
He turned toward Arvand.
“Did you tell somebody you were coming here?”
