Then I asked why she charged after hugs I initiated.
She said she wanted consistency.
I asked why Ella believed she could owe a balance.
She said the child had attached too much importance to the exercise.
I asked why Miriam had never been told.
Seraphina said my former wife would have reacted badly.
That answer was accurate.
Miriam had reacted badly.
So had I.
The mistake was Seraphina believing our reaction justified keeping the arrangement secret.
Eventually, I asked whether she could describe the system from Ella’s position.
She said she was tired of being made to sound cruel.
I waited.
She returned to explaining how often my daughter interrupted.
I understood then that she was still defending the inconvenience she felt rather than examining the fear she created.
The meeting ended without an agreement about returning home.
I told her Ella would not be left in her care.
She said I was choosing sides.
I answered that protecting a child was not a marriage negotiation.
There would be other matters to resolve.
That one was settled.
My sister Mila came to see Ella a week later.
She had given her money at Christmas.
Some of it had been used for the charges.
Mila knew that now.
She asked whether they could sit together in the garden.
Ella agreed.
I watched from the kitchen while they spoke.
Later, my daughter told me the important part.
Mila had not demanded to know why she didn’t say anything sooner.
She said:
“I’m sorry I didn’t ask more when you wanted smaller notes.”
Ella had asked her to change a twenty.
Then another.
Mila thought she was buying things at the school shop.
The child had needed money in amounts Seraphina would accept.
“She didn’t know,” Ella told me.
“No.”
“Is she sad?”
“Yes.”
“Do I need to give hers back?”
I sat beside her.
“No, sweetheart.”
“Because she gave it for skates.”
“It was your money to save or use. The wrong part was someone making you believe you had to spend it to be loved.”
Ella thought about that.
Then she opened the box.
For a while, she counted with Miriam’s help.
Not to qualify for anything.
